Fight for #15andFunding – Schedule of November 10 Day of Action Rallies

Tuesday, November 10 has been designated as the Fight for $15 Day of Action across New York State and nationwide.  Fast food workers will be joined by underpaid workers from human services fields – childcare workers, direct care workers, home care workers and consumer directed personal assistants – as they rally for a living wage.

In the ongoing fight for better wages for personal assistants in CDPA, as well as those in other jobs tied to Medicaid funding – your message should be $15 AND FUNDING!  The message must be made clear that the wages in Medicaid-funded healthcare jobs is tied to funding from the State.  Without an increase in funding, an increase in pay cannot happen!

Some things to think about regarding #15andFunding:

  • Reimbursement rates in Medicaid are lower than they were in 2006.  This means as the cost of living and inflation has increased, pay for workers has stayed the same – or in many cases, been cut!
  • Without higher reimbursement (funding) and higher wages, many workers will be forced to leave their human services jobs – jobs providing critical care and support for seniors, people with disabilities, and children.  What does it say about society’s priorities if it pays better to work in fast food than to work in jobs caring for people?
  • Wages in CDPA and home care are so low that many people who work in these Medicaid-funded programs end up on Medicaid themselves – ultimately costing the state more in the long run.

When discussing these events on social media, please use the hashtag #15andFunding to drive your point home and connect with other advocates.
