Election Day is over. What’s different in New York?

The New York State Legislature will look dramatically different in January. The Democrats have taken the Senate, resulting in both houses of the Legislature turning blue. Long Island, long a Republican stronghold, sent incumbents Todd Kaminsky and John Brooks back to Albany, Democrats appear to have beaten incumbents Elaine Phillips and Carl Marcellino to Anna Kaplan and James Gaughran, respectively. Democrat Monica Martinez has won in Senator Tom Croci’s vacated seat. Additionally, at this time, Senate Health Chair Kemp Hannon is trailing by 2,000 votes with only 7 election districts left to report. In New York City, Senator Martin Golden has lost to Andrew Gounardes. In the Hudson Valley, it currently appears that James Skoufis will win in Senator Larkin’s vacated seat, Jen Metzger will win in Senator Bonacic’s old seat, and Senator Terrence Murphy has lost to Peter Harckham. This would also point to a large loss for Senator Simcha Felder, who has been a large supporter of CDPA, but also a very controversial figure, as he is a Democrat that has given Republicans their majority for the past several years. The Democratic party is unlikely to accept him back with such a strong showing in this election.

In all, it appears that Senate Democrats may control 39 seats in the chamber. This is the first time Democrats have been in control of the Senate since 2010.

Governor Cuomo won by a large margin, and the Assembly keeps a supermajority for the Democrats. Letitia James is Attorney General and Tom DiNapoli won his re-election for Comptroller.
