Assembly Names CDPAANYS Executive Director as Recipient of This Year’s Dr. Henry Viscardi, Jr. Advocacy Award

The Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Association of New York State (CDPAANYS) would like to congratulate its Executive Director, Bryan O’Malley, for being named this year’s recipient of the Dr. Henry Viscardi, Jr. Advocacy Award. This award is presented by the New York State Assembly and honors those who have made tremendous strides in protecting the rights of New Yorkers with disabilities and their advocacy on behalf of people with disabilities.

The 12th Dr. Henry Viscardi, Jr. Advocacy Award will be presented at the Assembly’s Legislative Disabilities Awareness Day in the Well of the Legislative Office Building on May 16, 2016.

Sean Gerow, CDPAANYS Board President, personally congratulates Bryan for his hard work and being a champion for not only consumers within CDPA, but on behalf of all New Yorkers with disabilities.

Laura Haight, VP of Public Policy at the New York State Rehabilitation Association, said: “HCP commends the New York State Assembly for recognizing the significant contributions Bryan O’Malley has made championing the consumer directed personal assistance program, enabling chronically ill and physically disabled individuals to have greater flexibility and freedom of choice in obtaining personal care services in their homes. Bryan is an exceptionally smart, strategic, passionate, and effective advocate on behalf of consumers enrolled in this program.”

Lara Kassel, Coalition Coordinator of Medicaid Matters New York, said: “Through his years of working in health policy, Bryan has worked tirelessly to promote consumer interests.  We have seen many policy wins over the past few years that were in no small part due to Bryan’s advocacy.  This recognition is very well deserved, as Bryan continues to serve as a leader in advancing the interests of real people.”

Lindsay Miller, Executive Director of the New York Association on Independent Living (NYAIL) said: “The Independent Living community advocated for the creation of the consumer directed program years ago, and many Independent Living Centers serve as Fiscal Intermediaries of the program and are members of CDPAANYS. As such, Bryan O’Malley is a trusted and indispensable ally who has helped this program to grow across the State, empowering people with disabilities to have greater control over their home care. Bryan is very deserving of the Dr. Henry Viscardi, Jr. Advocacy Award as he has made a positive and significant impact on the lives of people with disabilities across the state.”

Michael Seereiter, President and CEO of the New York State Rehabilitation Association, said: “Bryan has years of experience successfully influencing public policy discussions that ultimately lead to better lives for people with disabilities.  He has a unique combination of passion, intelligence and experience that make him a very worthy recipient of this prestigious award.  If he were still with us today, Dr. Viscardi would be quite pleased.”
